Accommodations are determined individually for each student through an interactive process and based on functional limitations including temporary disabilities. Examples of what DSPS may provide are:

Adaptive Equipment

  • Assistive listening devices - hear lectures with sound amplification
  • Keyboards and peripherals
  • CCTV – magnifies reading materials
  • Whiteboards
  • Lockers – for daytime use to store books, backpack, equipment

Alternate Media Formats

  • Braille - brailled books and hand-outs
  • Electronic text - PDF format or Kurzweil Library
  • Print materials, including enlarged print
  • Synthesized audio from text-only content

Assistive Technology

  • Computer lab – computers available with assistive programs (such as JAWS, Zoomtext, Kurzweil, speech to text software)
  • Voice recognition - watch text appear on the screen when you speak into a microphone
  • Speech output – use computer to read written materials aloud (Kurzweil, JAWS)
  • Screen enlargers - use software to enlarge print and images (Zoomtext, JAWS)

Classroom and Instructional Support

  • Notetaking – coordination of peer notetaking, or support for independent notetaking using digital recorders and smart pens
  • Preferential seating and adaptive furniture placement
  • American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters
  • Captioning - spoken word converted into printed format displayed on a screen
  • Audio description - narration of visual information
  • Specialists - discuss your disability-related classroom needs
  • Academic Counselor – discuss your academic goals, choose classes, and create educational plan
  • Referral to campus and community resources

Testing Services

  • Extended time - proctored tests/quizzes with extended time
  • Assistive technology – screen readers (software that reads test aloud, such as Kurzweil, JAWS), screen enlargers (CCTV, Zoom Text)
  • Scribe – staff to assist in handwriting test answers and filling out scantrons
  • Distraction reduced testing environment in our Accommodated Testing Center.
