Education Tax Credit
Cuesta College, in compliance with the Taxpayer Relief Act (TRA) of 1997, will provide a tax return Tuition Statement/Form 1098-T to students who enrolled in credit courses and were charged eligible fees during each tax year.
Tax return Tuition Statements/Form 1098-T are mailed annually to eligible students. 1098-T forms are printed in January of the year following enrollment and are sent to the permanent address on the student's record at that time. To view current addresses on record with the College or to update addresses see View Addresses in myCuesta.
Students may also view and print individual Tuition Statements online using their myCuesta account. These statements can be found through the myCuesta Student tab then select the Tax Return Tuition Statement/Form 1098-T link under the Direct Links to Registration Services heading.
The Tuition Statement information provided on the Form 1098-T supports the student's claim for the American Opportunity Credit or other eligible tax credit programs and includes enrollment and fee information. This information is also reported to the IRS. Cuesta College's tax ID number is 522018681.
Cuesta College requires each student to supply their correct Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) in order to comply with Internal Revenue Service regulations for the annual reporting of Form 1098-T information. Under Internal Revenue Code Section 6722(a)(1), the College incurs a $100 penalty for each incorrect Form 1098-T reported. In order to avoid this penalty, students are asked to submit their legal name exactly as printed on their Social Security Card and their correct Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. This information is used only to comply with IRS regulations. In addition, students are required to provide this information to the College or risk being subject to a $50 IRS penalty in accordance with the Internal Revenue Code Section 6723.
Please contact the Admissions and Records Office for more information about SSN and ITIN records or to receive the form necessary to submit corrected SSN or ITIN information.
NEW REPORTING REQUIREMENTS FOR 2018 TAX YEAR.
In previous years, IRS Form 1098-T included a figure in BOX 2 that represented the qualified tuition and related expense (QTRE) the college BILLED to the student account for the calendar (tax) year. Due to a change to institutional reporting requirement under federal law, beginning with tax year 2018, the college will report in BOX 1 the amount of QTRE PAID during the year.
Cuesta College will report the eligible payments recieved within the tax year to the IRS, not the eligible fees billed by the student.
Students should keep all registration fee payment receipts to use in combination with the Form 1098T statement information to determine tax credit eligibility.
Cuesta College will NOT provide a Form 1098T statement to students whose eligible fees were waived (i.e., scholarships and/or CCPG) or those who received financial aid in amounts greater than the eligible fees charged.
Eligible fees included on Form 1098T and reported to the IRS are: Enrollment Fee (per unit), Non-Resident Tuition, Material Fees and Student Center Fee.
Fees not eligible/not reported: Health Fee, ASCC ID Card, Student Representative Fee and Parking Fee.
Fee Payment documentation available to students include:
- Receipts received/printed at the time of registration fee payment.
- Account Detail for Term and Payment Information online through myCuesta Web Services.
